Moving Expenses (Read that somewhere)

Post by Alwaysdream »

I think I read some where that Canadian Citizen can not deduct moving expenses to USA if they elect to be treated as CAN Resident this Tax year while reporting US income as world income minus paid US tax, am I correct?

No. You can't as CRA treat your canadian residence as your ordinary residence.
However, you can deduct your qualified moving expenses within US ( change job).

Please I want to understand why moving to USA for Job can't be deducted from Canadian Tax, even through Ufile allow me to write the foriegn address,

Another question if you are contractor in USA, can you include the income on your business in Canada?

Appreciate the help

You cannot claim expenses for the move on your Cdn return

If you are a contractor in US, but living in Canada, you MUST declare your income in canada. You may ALSO have to in US depending on work conditions.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Thanks, But I still asking why I can't, please do you have reference to that.

My other Question: I know that I have to report my income but if I have business Number in Canada, can I report that as part of my business income?

Look at the emigrants guide as well as the moving expenses information.

I'll let carson handle the business Q if he wishes.

Please restate and clarify your questions. I don't have a lot of time at this time of year to try and figure what you're asking!

I have business Number in Canada.
I earn an income in USA as contractor W2.
When I file my tax in Canada, can I report this income on my business as if I was self employed, the reason I ask, when I was self employed in Canada I pay my tax and charge GST, none is happening any more in USA.

What's "contractor W2"? Also, do you have a corporation, or are you a proprietorship? Both can have a BN.

Did you receive a W2 for US employment income, or do you mean you worked as a contractor and received a 1099?

Please be specific.

If you received a W-2, then it's employment income on both countries' tax returns, with Canada giving you a foreign tax credit.

If you received contracting income, then it can be included on your beusiness statement, personal or corporate.

In Canada I'm sole proprietory with BN.

I received a W-2 from US employment income as a contractor

Shall I assume that I must consider it as employment income and can't deduct any business expenses beside the foreign tax credit when file Canada Tax.

You may be able to deduct some required (i.e. T2200 from your employer) employment expenses on T777. Check the instructions.
