TN Visa Tax preparation help, visa transition from OPT to TN

Post by beavertails9 »

Hello,

Situation:
- Canadian Citizen who is now working full-time in U.S under TN Visa.
- I was Unemployed from May '13-Feb'14 (living with family friends) and receiving no income.
- Started working Feb '14 under F1-OPT Extension with Employer in US
- July '14 OPT expired, renewed with 3-yr TN Visa until July '17 with same US Employer
- Have been paying rent since September '14 (since I am living and working full-time in US temporarily until '17),
- Received W2 from Employer for '14.
- I spend 90% of my time in the US and just go home for holidays.

It is to my knowledge that I am considered a US tax resident and Canadian non-resident. Is this correct or must I file a 1040NR? Am I required to fill out/provide any additional information then what I would file on H&R Block or TurboTax online instructions? Specifically, as it relates to Health Insurance, I had Travel Insurance and no US Health Insurance. Now, as of Jan '15, I am fully covered through my employer.

This is my first year doing taxes. Thanks for your help. Please advise if I need to reach out to an accountant/lawyer to further help.
