TN Visa Filing US taxes for the first time

Post by trail_hiker »

Hello,
I moved to the US from Canada in Nov 2014 on a TN Visa. I have a W2 for my one month of work in the US. I started to file my US taxes with turbo tax but then discovered I need to file a 1040NR which they don't provide. I am currently in TX and was wondering if anyone can recommend an accountant who could file it for me. Has anyone used H&R Block for this type of filing?
Thanks

1040NR is really simple. Go to IRS.gov and use their form. You will owe very little if any tax, so I wouldn't waste money on an accountant on this

The more difficult thing for you will be your final Cdn departure tax return (ufie.ca handles it pretty good).

Thank you for the prompt reply Nelsona. I gather from searching the fourm that I also need to file a 1040 return in addition to the 1040NR...would that be correct? I am thinking that I could file the regular return with the turbo tax software, print it, and mail with the 1040NR that I complete. Would that be correct?
Thanks again in advance for any info :)

No, you are not resident for all of 2014, so there is no reason to file 1040.
