RRSP in Canada : cannot rebalance

Post by fepmn »

Hi,

I own a RRSP in Canada and am now a US permanent resident.
My bank in canada (TD) does not authorize me anymore to do any transaction at all but I really want to be able to at least re-balance within the account. I do mind the account staying in Canada.
Does anybody know if there is a location in Canada (maybe a canadian brokerage) where they would allow me to manage the money within my RRSP even if I live in the US?

Thank you. Fab

Sure. TD Waterhouse. None of the bank mutual fund companies (ie. the ones that sell only their family of funds) are licensed to deal with US residents. It has to be a self-directed account. TD Canada Trust is NOT TD Waterhouse, escpecially with respect to this issue.

TD waterhouse will easily open an account for you, transfer your holdings to them, and then allow trading etc.

This should have been done soon after leaving Canada. I'm surprised TD didn't demand taht you do this as soon as you gave them your US address.
