IRS Filing extension

Post by Mach7 »

Can anyone tell me if someone (like myself) who resides permanently in Canada can request an extension for filing to October...or has that boat already sailed?

It seems to me that the request has to be made before April 17th?

My situation is such that i do not have a clear understanding of these 8938 forms, not to mention the confusion of my accounts. I had the best intentions by going to a reputable Accounting Firm 6 months ago...but seems this is becoming a no win senario.

It's worth reading (all) nelsona's comments on this in the following thread:

I don't think you have anything to lose by filing 4868 at this point if you want to. They might deny the request, but it's not illegal to file it. If they accept the request then, perversely, they do not notify you.

The other option is to do as well as you can on all this and file now. It might keep you from having a heart attack. And if you spend all summer trying to get this all straightened out, you still might not be able to find the help you need.

Read the "When to file" section at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/int ... 24,00.html.

That address gets you a page not found message because of the period accidentally included at the end. It should be

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/int ... 24,00.html

Surprisingly, it says this:

"If you are unable to file your return by the automatic 2-month extension date, you can request an additional extension to October 15 by filing Form 4868 before the automatic 2-month extension date. "

That apparently means that you really can file the 4868 on or before June 15. But I don't know whether that deadline means postmark date or reception date. If you have software that can do an IRS e-file, you might be able to file the 4868 electronically.

Unless you are sending a check to cover what you figure you owe to IRS, it is never required to file an extension, because either you owe no money (so can file as late as you wish) , or your report is due in Ocrober or december (based on if you klive in US or not) because it contains regulatory report (8891, etc).
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
