International gradute from Canada(now work in USA): tax...

Post by lewiston »

I really don't know much about tax stuff, and it's always a trouble for me. Now it's more tricky now due to my current situation. I wish people at this site could give me some advice, thanks a lot in advance!

Background:
International student from Asia;
In Canada: went to Ontario Canada in Sep 2009 to begin study, got a Master degree in Sep 2011;
In USA: moved to USA in Oct 2011 with a H1B to start a full-time job

Income:
Have Teaching Assistanceship while studying in Canada.
Full-time job in USA

Tax:
Just filled 1040NR-EZ for US tax;
now am trying to figure out how to file Canadian Tax, because I spent 2/3 year there

Questions:
1. Do I belong to 'emigrate from Canada'?
It seems that I belong to this category, since all other 'Non-resident' categories are defined for entire year... In 2011, I spent 9 months in Canada, and almost 3 months in USA

2. I can't find the place/form to file the rent?
In my previous tax filing in Canada, there was a page to fill in rent amount. But now, after I indicated emigrating from Canada, this page is gone...

3. Am I correct saying only filing Canadian Tax for the period while I was in Canada? i.e., Canadian Tax applies to the first 9 months in 2011 before moving to USA, and US tax applies to the last three months in 2011 after moving to USA...
