1040 or 1040X?

Post by kal2 »

Hello. The discussion on this board has been really helpful in many ways. I am especially grateful for comments that have shed light on trends and practices.

I now have a question about the mechanics of things. I have seen several references to filing 1040X forms instead of 1040s. Would this always be the way to go? Or should the first filing for any year always be the 1040? Or does it really matter?

1040X is only used if you are amending your taxes. 1040 is for regular filing.

one file 1040-X after having filed 1040 for a particaulr year. Once never files more than one 1040 in a year.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
