Canadian pension income splitting and US taxes

Post by mstaum »

I am a dual citizen filing separately in the US while my wife is Canadian and does not file in the US as she has no US income. If we go along with the splitting of pension income as now allowed by Canadian tax law (my pension income is considerably higher), will this not reduce my tax credit on 1116 and possibly nullify the savings in Canadian taxes with much higher US taxes? I suppose next spring we will need to have an accountant sort this out.

Yes, it will.

Of course, filing jointly would have the effect of reducing your US tax as well, so you may simply have to begin doing this.

Since your pension income is not eligible for foreign earned income exclusion, you may have had to consider filing jointly anyways. This may just push you into that decision.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
