SSN for those with TD visa?

Post by canuckmom »

I was told that one needed to have work authorization in order to get a SSN, but the DMV office told me that had been changed and I needed to get an SSN. Are spouses with TD allowed to get an SSN?

No.Nothing has changed at the SSA in that regard. You still need to get a letter from SSA saying you can't get SSN, and then (except for a couple of states -- NJ and IL I believe) you will be issued a DL.

DMV employees don't know their own jobs, so should not be advising you on what other govt agencies rules are.

spouses with TD can not get an SSN, the get an ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number) that you apply for through the IRS.

When I got my DL all I had to show was my passport with visa or TN status information

The rules vary so much from state to state that it is pointless to give experience without telling state 9and when, since laws have become more strict).

But SSA (which is federal) has not issued SSN for the purpose of DL for a decade now.
