Residency
I am looking at taking a job in the US for seven to ten years. I will either rent an apartment or buy a condo and come back to Canada to visit 6 to ten times per year. My wife will not be joining be for two years and will stay in our house. Can I be considered a US resident only for tax purposes since my address and job and where I will be living 90% of the time will be the US? The advice I'm getting is that I'll still be a factual resident of Canada until my wife joins me and I sell the house even though I am living and working in the US.
Canada would likely view you as resident in Canada, primarily because of your wife remaining there, but also becuase of your frequent returns to the family home.
For you to assure that you would be a 'deemed non-resident' which is someone who has the ties in Canada but is treated like a non-residnet due to meeting the treaty requirments of residence elsewhere (like US), it would be better if SHE visit you.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
