Tax between states

Post by rogerme »

Hello!

I have a question about filing for tax between states for my brother and I.

- In my situation: I moved to a new job in another state at the very end of 2015 (December 30, 2015). However, in 2016 I received the bonus payment for work I did in 2015 with the old employer. While I will file taxes in the new state for wages associated with my new job in 2016, I was wondering whether the 2015 bonus paid in 2016 should be filed as income in the old state (since that's where I worked to earn it) or in the new state.

- For my brother's situation: he is a student on a F-1 visa. Over the summer, he moved to a new state for an internship (worked in NY). He is now back at school in the old state (MA). Given that his resident state is MA due to the time he is in school, should he file the internship income under MA state?

Thanks for your help!

This can be dealt with at a normal US taxation site. This is for international cross-border issues.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
