Hello,
I moved to the US from Canada on Jan 31st 2016. I have had only minor income with a T4 slip from grad school during January.
I would like to be considered non-resident of Canada starting from Jan 31st. My situation is the following:
- No home in Canada
- No dependents in Canada (am single with no wife or kids)
- Own a car registered in Quebec
- Still have my driver's license from Quebec
- The address for my DL is currently my parent's apartment in Quebec
- Have a bank account in Canada
- Have car loan in Canada
- Have a Canadian passport
- Cancelled my provincial health insurance
I would like my car to continue being registered in Quebec until my loan is paid off. If I import my car to the US, it will cause complications with my loan because my license plates will change. I would like to keep my Quebec driver's license for driving my Quebec plated car until the loan is paid off.
1. Can I still be considered a non-resident of Canada?
Thanks,
Zak

You are a DEPARTING resident of Canada (Quebec), file both fed and qc returns with departure date of jan 31
The car issue is separate, and is more determined by your STATE than Quebec, so you will have to import, plate and register in your STATE.
You don't need to keep the car in QC to pay off the loan.
Never fake an address for these matters, you are breaking the laws of your state, and are invalidating your insurance.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
