Too late to file a Departure Tax Return with CRA?

Post by kvlstr »

Hi,

I left Canada and moved to the USA. That was November 1998. I didn't know about filing a final return in Canada, I just up and left. I didn't have a wife or kids then, didn't own property, didn't maintain an apartment there, etc.

I did file a US return for 1998, for the six weeks or so that I earned income there that year. I've filed in the US every year since, of course.

I have lived in America continuously since 1998, and became a US citizen in 2007. My only residential tie to Canada is a passport.

I don't expect to live in Canada again, but I'd like to have the option.

Is there a procedure for people like me, with the CRA?

Do I need a lawyer? If so, what kind?

Don't worry. There is neither anything you can do, nor anything CRA can do.

None of this would have any impact on your return to Canada.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
