Employment lawyer to review contract for TN worker

Post by BlueLemon »

How much should it cost to have a lawyer review a job offer for a Canadian coming on a TN visa to the SF Bay area? I'm told it's best to have the lawyer be local to that area, and it's one of the most expensive regions in the state. I'm quoted $400-600 hourly rates, though because I don't have all the paperwork yet they can't estimate how many hours may be required.

I have never had a lawyer look over my other job offers, but this seems more critical seeing how I would be more vulnerable on a TN visa and not able to change employers as easily.

Thoughts?

This isn't a tax question, so you might try the immigration forum on this site.
But, TN is designed NOT to need a lawyer. A job offer letter is not usually sufficient to get TN, you need a TN letter, which has specific requirements not usually listed in an offer letter.

I'm not concerned about it from the point of view of immigration, but from just usual employment relations and contract terms. As in, are the conditions fair or do they put the employer at an unfair advantage, which I may not be able to spot myself because of the convoluted ways these contracts are typically written in. So the question would be just as out of place in an immigration section.

I'm pretty sure the TN stuff itself will work out just fine, the employer is actually going to help out with that.

Then this question isn't for any of the forums here.
