Ontario Health Tax

Post by gwexco »

I am an American citizen and also a Canadian PR, living in Canada but commuting to work in the Niagara Falls, NY, daily. I believe I understand the issue wherein the taxes I have paid to the US are transferrable to my Canadian taxes. I end up paying more in the US than Canada asks for, however the difference does not appear to affect the amount I have to pay for Ontario Health Tax. Am I wrong in that I have to pay the $450. I would have thought that would be covered by the US taxes I pay. Thanks!

Any tax you owe and pay in canada is deductible on your US return in the year you actually pay it, so you could keep this in mind for next year. The $450 becomes just like your Cdn property tax, if you itemize, using Schedule A

This should help lower your US taxrate nearer to your Cdn one.

That is the best 'relief' I can see for this tax, given that you live in canada and work (as an employee) in US. If you have some Cdn-source income that you report on 1040, then a portion of that money (lumped together with your pre-credit Cdn tax burden) to reduce you US tax.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
