Combining 401(a) and 403(b) contributions on RC268

Post by MSS1976 »

I am a Canadian resident who commutes to a job in the U.S. (with a U.S.-based employer). As part of my compensation, I am mandatorily enrolled in a 401(a) plan (with both employer and employee contributions), and I have been reporting these amounts on RC268.

My employer also allows me to make additional elective contributions—above the required 401(a) amounts—into a supplemental 403(b) plan. These extra contributions are entirely employee-funded (no employer match). Can I include these supplemental 403(b) contributions on my Canadian tax return (RC268), provided I have sufficient RRSP deduction room? Does it matter that the 403(b) is supplemental/optional and not funded by the employer?

If I can include these, should I combine both sets of employee contributions (401(a) and 403(b)) and enter the total in Boxes 1 and 2 of a single RC268 for the year? Or should I complete a second, separate RC268 form for these 403(b) contributions?

Thanks!

You would report the total of both contributions.
They are both employer-sponsored plans, so qualify for inclusion on RC268.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

All your contributions go in box 1.
