Keeping Investing account open as non resident Canadian

Post by tinmark50@gmail.com »

Hello all,

I will be moving to Texas next month and have a self directed investment account and TFSA with TD waterhouse. I phoned the agent and they stated that i may have to liquidate the account.

Is there some other broker that would allow me to keep my investment account open.

You can keep your TFSA with most brokerages, although there is little benefit for doing so while in US.

Your investment account cannot be managed while in US, as this violates SEC regulations, because Cdn brokerages cannot deal with US residents in non-sheltered accounts.
You are best off liquidating both accounts; you may be able to transfer some of your investments to a US broker.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
