US tax software that allows e-filing from Canada

Post by barb1214 »

I live in Canada and ran into a problem when the CRA wanted an IRS account transcript as part of a foreign tax credit claim review. My 1040 was very delayed in being processed and once it was processed, it took months to get the transcript. CRA was understanding about the delay and granted an extension. But, to avoid this issue in the future, I've been told it is better to e-file the 1040. Can anyone recommend a US tax program that allows e-filing from Canada when a f1116 and f8833 are part of the return? Also, I haven't been able to get an IRS online account because I don't have a US cell phone. I don't know if an online account is necessary for e-filing. Thank you.

e-filing doesn't avoid this issue.

Can anyone recommend a US tax program that allows e-filing from Canada when a f1116 and f8833 are part of the return?
Gosystems or CCH

correct but Cdns have gotten them using ID.me if you don't mind the massive intrusion of privacy and scary moment when your computer flashes all different colors while running a face scan on you followed by a live video interview. get your irs account transcript by faxing Form 4506T to IRS

I don't know if an online account is necessary for e-filing.
it's not

I've e-filed from Canada using both TurboTax and TaxAct. I'm surprised to learn there's US tax software that doesn't allow this.

Thanks. Was hoping e-filing would get processed faster.

Thanks. I've not been able to efile 8833 with my return with Turbotax. Guess I'll have to see what I'm doing wrong since you're able to do it.

No one in this thread said there's US tax software that doesn't allow this.

barb inquired if she could e-file 1040 with 1116 and 8833 and for e-file software names.

I told her two names and said that e-filing has no bearing on CRA request for IRS transcript - CRA wants it whether the 1040 is e-filed and mailed. E-filing will help the timing as IRS will process it sooner than a mailed return.

I always efile from Canada, and if needed submit the 8833 (never had problem with 1116) afterwards. 8833 is sometimes allowed sometimes not with Taxact.

Got my refund two weeks ago.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but wondering if anyone has suggestions as to the best US tax return software/e-filing options from Canada. Thanks!

roger that nelsona, good suggestion. I'd been using one of the big two software desktop solutions but this year the availability/purchase outside the US has been made more difficult. I was just looking to see if there is a desktop version of something that folks might be aware of that isn't too crazy expensive; I know that TaxAct is a popular one but concerned (maybe unnecessarily) about working in online mode. Maybe that's just the way it is now and I need to get use to it.
