Hi guys, hope all is going good.
I am Indian by birth. I worked on H1B in US for 4 year and then moved to Canada in 2013 and now a Canadian citizen. I live in Ottawa and have primary residence and 4 rental townhouses. My wife is also working for semi-govt employer. We both have RRSP and kids have RESP. We invested RRSP in TDB900, TDB902, TDB911 (TD Index Fund E-Series - NL). I recently got approved for US green card via my employer (employer parent company is in US) and would be moving on H1B to US next month and then file for my Green card there and hopefully get it in 6-8 months from now. After that US citizenship in 5 year. I am allowed to worked from home 100% and would live across border city in US which is 60km from Ottawa and would be spending 190 days in US and rest in Canada.
My wife and kids would stay back in Canada as university fee is cheap in Canada. After getting US citizenship, I might come back to Canada and work for US employer from Canada (dual citizenship and green card residency commitment not there). That is the current plan but since my kids were born in US and already dual citizen, we might also end up retiring in US. understand tax complication and what I should I avoid investing and what I should wind up before getting US green card.
I will have two different types for taxation periods:
1) Working in US for 6 years in Green Card for US employer but have canadian rental and investment income.
2) Working in Canada for US employer remote 100% after 6 year as dual Citizen.
3) Move to US forever and tax implications for RRSP and selling rental properties.

Have you seen the GC waiting list for Indian-born? You will not get it in 6-8 months. 10 YEARS maybe.
In any event, your arrangements, coming back to canada to visit family would NOT break Cdn tax ties.
I would simply commute at this point.

Hi, I forgot to mention that when I was in US, my employer filed my GC in Oct 2012. Date is current now and that is the reason I am going back to US as Employer refused to do consular processing.

Nothing changes from my answer. You aren't obliged to live in US while AOS is in process, just while EAD/AP are being processed.
Not sure what processing times are for EAD/AP these days.
Coming back regularly to visit family in Canada, while having a home there as well, makes your centre of vital interests in Canada, not US.

HI Nelson, My question is more about being tax resident of US while maintaining RRSP, RESP and rental properties in Canada.

Yeah, that has been covered here many times. Happy browsing.
