Being a lease co-signer and Canadian residency

Post by szbjsh »

I am a Canadian living and working in the US since Jan 1 2021, hence a US resident. I may have to co-sign for a relative on a lease in Ontario, but I don't actually live there. Will this make me a Canadian resident? My understanding is no because I am living and working in the US, which will render me a US resident regardless under the tie-breaker rules.

No, you will remain a US resident, even if you owned the house outright. You live and work in US.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
