US citizen lived in Canada for 6 months

Post by Hihello »

Hi,

I lived in Canada for 6 months, I transferred offices with the same employer and was on a work visa. Do I still file my us taxes the same as if I never moved away? Do I need to file Canadian taxes? Any forms I should know given the short residency?

Thanks!

Your US taxes will be the same: even if you lived in Canada for decades, you would still report world income on a 1040.
Were you an employee of a Cdn company? If so, you definitely will need to file a Cdn return as well.

So you will need to report the wages on a CDn return for the province your worked in, and use the taxes related (including EI and CPP contributions) as a credit on your US return.
