Working as an independent contractor on 1099

Post by TNEngineer »

I am currently working for a US company as an employee on TN which expires this Dec. Beginning Jan 2019, I will be working for the same company as an independent contractor on 1099 but will be based in Canada. If the US company issues me Form 1099 for the services performed, am I responsible to file US federal, State, self employment tax for that income. I am aware that I have to report the income to CRA and pay Federal and provincial taxes but not sure whether CPP is applicable in this case.

Thanks in advance.

You will be taxable only in Canada. 1040NR to explain why not taxable, No SS or medicare, only CPP.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
