First Time Filing in Canada From USA

Post by keepchill »

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some help regarding filing my taxes in Canada from the US for the first time, and if at all possible I would like to simplest instructions as the more I read about this, the more confused I get. I was looking in to getting an international accountant to help, but simply put we can't afford it. They are charging over $1,500, and that is not in our budget.

I moved in January 2017, and married my USC spouse in February 2017.

I have received a T3, T4, and T5 from Canada this year. I wanted to know exactly what forms I need to file, I do not own property in Canada and all I have left there is a bank account, an RRSP, and a locked in RRSP.

Also, my T4 has a small amount of income on it (under $4000), so do I need to report that on my US tax return? I'll be filing with my husband.

Thank you for your help!

All your income needs to be reported on your joint 1040.
As four our cdn return, you are considered an emigrant so need to file departure return.
It sounds like you did not tell your banks etc that you left canada
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Is there a specific form I need to file in Canada for departure taxes?

If I notify my banks that I’ve left, will I not receive the T3 and T5 next year?
