I'm a Canadian Citizen (Alberta) and I moved to the US January 2017 as a Green Card holder and while I strongly believe I'll need a cross-border tax accountant to file my US taxes (I had no idea that a TFSA with mutual funds would cause so many complications...) I wanted to file my Canadian tax returns myself to reduce the amount of fees I'm going to be paying for the US tax returns/IRS compliance.
I have the following Canadian assets:
- 6 bank accounts (I am the primary holder for 2 and the secondary holder for the other 4)
- 2 RRSP
- 3 TFSA (one is a mutual fund...)
In 2017, the only Canadian income I received was EI (T4E has an amount in Total Benefits Paid and Income Tax Deducted) and a little interest from my savings account.
What forms do I need to file with the CRA to:
- determine if I owe additional taxes/receive a refund for the income tax deducted (still need to file federal and provincial I'm assuming?)
- let them know that I have relocated to the US
Any advice would be appreciated and thank you in advance!!

You are NOT deemed non-resident, yo uare a simple non-resident (accounts don;t make you resident) , and you will file a DEPARTURE return for a resident of Alberta for 2017, with a departure date of January xx.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
