Canadian Phd Student in US with T5 income in Canada

Post by CanadianF1 »

Hi

I just started my Phd in the US in Sept 2016 on F1 visa. So I am in the situation where I have some US income (US scholarship) and T5 income in Canada for the year 2016.
How should I file my taxes?
I understand I should file 1040NR in the US, but should I report my Canadian T5 income in this form (1040NR) ? or should I file separately each income in the country where it was earned ?
The Canadian T1 asks if I was still living in Canada on Dec 31 2016, should I answer no and report the US scholarship in the T1 as well ?

Please help

1040NR is only for US-sourced income. You are not considered a US resident, and remain a Cdn resident for the next few years.
In Canada you will continue to report world income, including the US income. You will take credit for any US tax on your Cdn return.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
