I received a 1099-DIV for US-based holdings in my RRSP, Why?

Post by sdinto »

I am a US resident and not filing Canadian taxes. I have US companies in my RRSP currently held in Questrade. For 2016, Questrade sent me 1099-DIV for these holdings, even if they are in tax-deferred accounts. Should I have received this? I reached out to Questrade and they keep repeating that it is a policy-change for them (Questrade) to now issue 1099-DIVs (they didn't send me one in 2015). They also insist it will not affect my taxes in the US, but I am not comfortable with their assurance.

Any thoughts? I shouldn't report this 1099-DIV in my US taxes, correct?

Thanks!

Correct, if you are deferring taxation on your RRSP in US.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
