Tax refunds for Canadian citizens with U.S. income

Post by barkerkevin »

Hi folks, as an independent contractor working for a U.S. company, I'm having 30% of my income withheld by the IRA. Do any Canadians here have any advice for claiming it back? I don't have an ITIN

You should be first establishing that you should not be withheld. That would be with an 8233 form
But any tax incorrectly withheld would be claimed back by a 1040NR, along with an ITIN application.

What is your status in US. If it is TN, you should apply for an SSN. If it is merely B1, then ITIN is way to go.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
