American marrying Canadian citizen, do I need to pay income tax to Canada

Post by firenzestar »

I am an American, engaged to be married to my fiancee who is a Canadian citizen and US permanent resident and we are wondering about the tax laws on both sides of the Canada/US border. As an American, do I need to file and pay taxes to Canada if I marry a Canadian? Similarly, will my fiancee have to declare my income on her Canadian taxes and how will that affect her? She has been living away from Canada for >5 years and still continues to file taxes to Canada.

Thank you for your input!

First off, your spouse shouldn't be reporting world income to Canada anymore, only certain types of Cdn income.
If you live in US, you too will not need to report tax in canada.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
