How to file taxes as a Canadian nonresident alien in the US?

Post by Sonx »

I left Canada on September 9, 2015 and started working in the United Sates under TN Status September 14, 2015. I did not work or have any income in 2015 in Canada. I do not pass the Substantial Presence Test in the US for 2015. Which forms do I have to fill out, who do I report to, and what do I report?

I did some searching on these forms and by the sounds of it I have to file the 1040NR form with the IRS and file my taxes as I normally did in Canada with the CRA but this time including my worldwide (US) income but applying for a tax credit, on my Canadian tax return, for my US income, so I am not doubled taxed.

Am I correct? Is there anything I am missing? I want to make sure I make the April 15 deadline.

Thanks! :D

Sigh,
You are a DEPARTING resident for Cdn tax purposes in 2015. You need to put a departure date in your CDN return and not report US income after that dat

Covered 100s of times here already,.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Thanks for the info! I must of misunderstood some of the threads I was reading - some of them have mixed information. I just want to make sure I get it right.

Hey nelsona,

Should I be sending my Canadian taxes to the non-resident office? or should I send them to the office of the province I lived the majority of 2015 in?

It's up to you, between the office for your last province, or international. I would send it to International.
