US citizen working in Canada

Post by trwalsh »

Hello,

I am a US citizen who is working in Quebec since June 1, 2015 under a work permit. I have income from one employer in Canada since that date, as well as multiple sources of income in the US from before I moved (including wages and sold investments).

I understand that I must declare all worldwide income to the IRA on the 1040, but I'm not so clear on what I need to report to the CRA. Must I report my US income from before I become a Canadian resident? What about stocks I bought and sold all before arriving in Canada?

Similarly - do I apply for foreign tax credits on both my US and Canadian returns, or only one? Is there an order in which they must be filed?

Many thanks for any help you might be able to offer!

You are considered a newcomer to Canada. There is a newcomer guide from CRA which explains the process.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
