US Citizen Couple with one US income and one Canadian income

Post by lrf2001 »

I am an US citizen mostly living in the US and earning in the US. My husband is a US citizen living mostly in Toronto and earning in Toronto. I am not sure whether I need to report my husband's Canadian income on our joint US return, or my US income on my husband's Canadian return. Or whether I need to file a return in Canada myself. Both of us are spending time in both countries, so I am not even sure whether we are properly residents of both. Thanks so much for your help.

If you file a joint US return, it MUST include ALL of your worldwide income as a couple.
He must also file a Cdn return report all his world income.

Whether YOU need to file in Canada depends on how many days you spend in Canada in a year, and whether he visits you when he's not working, or you visit him.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
