US taxes as a Canadian Citizen, US REsident

Post by chiggins82 »

HI there, I am hoping for a little help. I moved to the US from Canada in March, 2015. I have income in Canada (From Jan-March) and I collected EI from March to November. I also have a job in the US that I started in Nov 2015.

I came to the US on a K-1 and was married in April, I filed and was approved for my green card in October. My husband is a US citizen and works.

My understanding is that I need to do taxes in Canada and let them know I moved. I am confused on what to do in the US.

Can someone give me some high level steps for filing US taxes under these circumstances? Just looking for the basics.

Can turbo tax handle this type of situation for taxes?

Thanks!

Sorry, Another question. Is there any minimum you must make to file taxes in US? I only collected income in the US for 1 month, so it is minimal.

Cdn taxes: See Emigrant section of CRA. Ufile works fine for these departure returns.

US taxes. You will file fill year 1040 with spouse, reporting ALL income for the year.
IRS will credit you on the Cdn tax that you paid. Taxact or any other software handles your couple's tax

I hope that your EI was withheld at 15% flat rate (for US residents) or did they not know you moved to US?
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
