W9 and FATCA

Post by anon609 »

Hi,

I was born in Canada and I was able to get dual-citizenship with the United States when I was 18. I spent two years at school in the US and filed my taxes for those two years. After school I closed my accounts, moved back to Canada, and have been living here since.

It has been about 8 years since I moved back to Canada and my bank contacted me asking me to fill out the W9 form. I have been filing my taxes in Canada with the CRA but I haven't reported taxes in the US since I left and don't know what I should do now. Am I in deep trouble with the IRS?

Thanks

Yes. US citizens are required to report world income to IRS, and in recent years the existence and/or value of their foreign asstes.

There are severl excellent threads on this, so we won;r repeat here.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
