I left line 12 entirely blank. The instructions state:
"Do not include time spent in the United States or its possessions before your period of bona fide residence or physical presence, whichever applies, began or after it ended".
I think that's the right thing to do, but the IRS can tell me if I am wrong - either way, it doesn't impact any of the numbers.
How I did my 1040 (1st year TN in USA), and an 8833 question

Just read this on irs.gov:
Not foreign earned income: Foreign earned income does not include the following amounts:
-Pay received as a military or civilian employee of the U.S. Government or any of its agencies
-Pay for services conducted in international waters (not a foreign country)
-Pay in specific combat zones, as designated by an Executive Order from the President, that is excludable from income
-Payments received after the end of the tax year following the year in which the services that earned the income were performed <-- Isn't this our situation?
