First year dual-states tax filing

Post by potax »

Hello all,
I moved to US in early 2014 and I am filing my return for the first time (in fact I am doing the extension first and then when I receive my Canadian tax return, will do the actual filing). Here is a list of few questions:

1) I am using TaxAct. Can I do the extension electronically? In words can I use Taxact online extension feature to file and extension?

2) For the actual return, Should I mail the papers or I just can do it online/efile? in the case of paper filing, do I need to send all slips and document with the return ?

Thanks a lot,
Paul

Taxact will answer whether you can use their system to extend.
Rememebr though that you only need to extend if you think you owe money and are sending a payment. otherwise it is pointless to extend; everyone has until October 15 in any event.

As for what you send by paper, IRS requires very little, and taxact will give you instructions as to what you include.

You might not be able to e-file this year because of not having filed in the past, or perhaps because you may be including a w-7.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
