House sale in Canada and departure date

Post by ivg »

Hello all,

I work and live in California on TN status since July 2012.
My wife did not work in 2012-2014.
My wife sold our house in Canada and joined me last February 2013.
I filed as resident with CRA and 1040NR with IRS for 2012.
Would it be better for me to do the following?
1. Amend my CRA file for 2012 and make it the departure return.
2. Amend my IRS return for 2012 and change it from 1040NR to 1040.
3. Make my departure date July 2012 and my wife's departure date Feb 2013.

Thanks,
Ivan
