Filing FBAR electronically, signature?

Post by Pablo »

After filing paper forms for years, I'm going to use the BSA website this year. I've perused the FinCen form 114 and it seems simple enough. It even says that "there's no need to login or register" but it also asks for a signature.

Question, so how do I sign? Do they assign me a PIN at some point...?

Thanks,
Pablo

You need to create your account on BSA first and a personal PIN will be given to you

Thanks but the problem I'm seeing on the BSE site is that I can only enroll as a Supervisor for an organization in order to get an ID and/or PIN.

I'm retired and only want to file the FBAR.

Also, I'll be filling in 114a because we file 1040 jointly but the FBAR form only allows one digital signature (that would be me). Does this mean he has to register as well and get an BSA ID?

Very confusing.

Actually I just checked and you do not need a PIN or a BSA account to file. You just download the form, fill it out and then upload it on the BSA site.

Looks like they changed the process again. Last year they said that in order to e-file you needed a BSA account with a PIN. Now this year it is a straight upload of the form. Once received you will get an e-mail with a personal identifier. Much more simple. Common sense prevailed!!!

Thanks everyone! Well I just went ahead, followed the prompts, filled the whole thing and clicked "sign". It went through. A note then appeared as a receipt, which I printed, and a confirmation e-mail arrived almost immediately. So that was that. Very simple.

A caveat, the line by line instructions for filling this FBAR are out of date and probably refer to a previous FBAR electronic form, according to which registration and signing with a PIN was necessary....this is where I got confused.

Again, you do NOT need to become a BSA-filer for just the 2014 FBAR.

You are not submitting the old form, you are submitting a FinCEN form.

Yes, but just to be precise, the line by line instructions are for the TD form, not the FinCEN form.

This electronic FinCEN form replaces the previous paper TDF 90-22.1 as there is no more paper filing for FBAR?

Correct. e-filing began optionally in the last year or 2, but now is mandatory.
