ITIN Supporting Documentation

Post by awise »

Question for those Canadians working in the US on a TN with a spouse on a TD. When applying for a ITIN for your spouse, what supporting documentation did you supply?

I'm having trouble interpreting the instructions for form W-7. Based on what I know about the TN, it qualifies as a status and not strictly a visa. My spouse falls under the category of a "US resident alien" - the instructions for which mention nothing about supplying visa documentation. Sadly, I'm not sure if the IRS treats a TN as a status or if they lump it in with visas.

Did anyone on a TN have trouble obtaining a ITIN for their spouse using only a passport as supporting documentaiton? If so, what other docs did you provide?

You will need a copy of her passport. Neither of you get Visas from state department.
Had no problem getting itin on TD status while living in US.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
