Hello,
This is another topic where the more you look around, the more confusing it becomes... I took a leave of absence in Canada and worked on a TN in the first six months of 2012 (different employer). This required me to have an apartment in NYC, even though I still had a house in Canada. Would the rent in NYC be eligible as a job expense (lodging) in my itemized deductions? I had not thought about the possibility initially, but then I remembered that my US contract was negotiated up to compensate me for the extra housing expense, and right now I am being taxed on this amount. Also, I cannot find based on Pub 463 anything that would disqualify this deduction, but I may be misunderstanding some aspects.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Nick

It is deductible on 1040 and 1040NR, but all you are doing is raising your Cdn tax. The expenses are not eligible in canada.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
