Dual status return and general sales tax deduction

Post by gnham »

Hi,

When filing a dual status return in the year of departure (i.e. filing with 1040 as statement, 1040NR as return), is it possible to take the general sales tax deduction for the portion of the year for which I was a resident? There is a space in the 1040 Schedule A for this, but not in the 1040NR - Schedule A.

Thanks!

1040NR doesn't count deductions as "portions" of year. If you arechhosing to file dual on year of departure, then only the deductions that you can take on 1040NR are eligible, regardless of when they occur during the year.

The instruction for 1040NR list the dedcutions you can take.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
