2012 in Canada for 10 months, USA for remainder...

Post by 1cda4u@gmail.com »

2012 earned income & lived in Canada for 10 months; BC. Emigrated to USA November 1st, (Fiance VISA) married November 16th. Did not earn income in the US in 2012. Do I file a General Tax form for BC?

What about 'World Income' from my husband? We did not live together until November 1st, 2012 in USA, Hawaii. We did NOT live together in Canada. *He's a Captain* works A LOT * visits a little.

You are an EMIGRANT from canada. File using the CRA emigrant guide.

for US, if you want to file jointly with spouse for 2012, you MUST include world income for 2012. You can then exclude any Cdn wages, and/or use foreign tax credits, to lower the US tax bill, while lowering your spoiuses tax bill as well.

He must file married, eithr separately or jointly, so it becomes a question of math.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
