Employment Expenses for US Employer

Post by cullen »

Can a Canadian resident deduct employment expenses on the T1 for a temporary job in the US with a US employer. Or can it only be for a CDN employer who can complete T2200 (Declaration for Employment Conditions)

Thanks in advance

You probably can have a US employer fill this out.

Remember though, that as an employee, your eligible expenses are severely limited (see T4044 guide and its attached form) .

Remember too, that 'travel' and 'car' expense do not apply to the travel you do back and forth to your place of work, unless you OFTEN and Regularly are sent to WORK at other locations.

In other words, if you travel around the country for this job, you could deduct expenses, if they are not reimbursed.

If however you simply fly/drive down from Canada to work in one office, you can't dedcuct the cost of those trips.

That applies whether the job is in Canad or not.
