Canadian Consultant Working for US Company

Post by pcarrollnf »

I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada but working for a US company. I have been working in this situation for the past 6 years and have been paying Canadian taxes each year. I occasionally travel to the US to work at the US company's headquarters. No more than 1 or 2 weeks each year. I have a TN visa when travelling to the US.

I recently have gotten some paperwork from the IRS saying that I have to complete a Self employment tax form along with a 1040 tax form for the 2010 tax year. I have never received any forms from the IRS in any previous year. I have indicated to the IRS that I live in Canada and that I am a Canadian citizen working as a consultant for a US company.

Am I required to fill these forms out and submit them to the IRS? Will I be required to pay any taxes to the US?

Thanks.

You need to obtain a compliance letter from CRA which shows that you pay Cdn CPP.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Once I obtain this CPP compliance letter, do I send this to the IRS? Am I still required to complete the forms that they sent me?

Of course you have to send this to IRS. It is to avoid having to pay SE tax.
