Sold house after leaving USA

Post by canadausksa »

Left USA in Nov 2007, sold house in Feb 2008. Filed 2007 taxes. But I did not file anything for 2008 - didn't think I had to - was my primary residence, lived there for three years, selling price 150,000, cap gains ~20,000, and buyer intended to live there as primary residence. Did I need to file? If not, why? (I researched it back then, but I can't remember why I did not file) Thanks for any help that you can offer.

You did not have to file anything in US, if you met all the exemptions listed in Pub 519 as a non-resident seller.

Now, you did have to report the sale on your Cdn return, or at least file the primary residence exmption, to exclude any gains from Nov 2007 to the time you sold.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
