Exit Return help.

Post by CA »

My wife is a Canadian and I am an American, and we live in US. She became a US permanent resident in 2007, but she had continued to work in Canada on a minimal part-time basis. She does not own any properties in Canada. She has some RRSPs, few bank accounts, and a RPP.

she also had a part-time job in US. She was paying Canadian tax on her incomes in US and Canada.

Now, she has stopped working in US and Canada for two years.

Now, we just found out that she needs to file an Exit Return with CRA, and who knows what else.

How should we proceed with this?

Its not that complicated since she has no prperty, you simply file a T1 in the year you left canada and specify the date of your departure you will then select the province of residence on the date of departure and the return is filed just as a regular return. Only put income on it till date of residence after that you file in the US. The software will prorate teh non refundable tax credits for teh number of days you were in Canada.
