Exemptions: Canadian vs US tax rules for dependents

Post by seanus »

First just the US tax question - In the US when claiming dependents and you are filing separately can both parents declare all children? In Canada I think a dependent can only be on one return.

Now when US citizens living in Canada file their 1040s do the dependent claims need to be the same between the US and Canadian taxes.

Thanks for your advice!

A child can only be claimed on one parent's return, of course.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
