Hi- I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this has already been asked and answered.
I have been living and working in the US with a TN visa for the last 4 years (going tomorrow for my next renewal). I have filed taxes in the US every year, but have not filed a CDN tax return in the last 5 years (my last year in Canada I had no income since I was a student). I have no ties to Canada (no income, no property, no spouce, etc).
Question:
1) Should I have been filing tax returns in Canada all this time?
2) When I return to Canada, will I have to pay CDN taxes on Income earned while living and working in the US?
Thanks!
Justin

It probably would have been best to file a tax return in the year that you left, stating the date you left, but this is not absolutely mandatory.
But, as long as you don't have house or spuse in Canada, and you meet US tax residency requirement (like presence) you don't ned to pay Cdn tax on US income, and don't have to report in Canada in non-resident years unless you owe Cdn tax on Cdn income.
