Filing Taxes and the TD F 90-22.1

Post by toronto »

I have dual, Canadian-US citizenship. In 1970 my family moved to Canada from the US. I have never submitted a US tax return because I didn't know I had to, plus I pay Canadian taxes. I just found out today about the TD F 90-22.1, while listening to a CBC Radio program. Now, I am lost...... I downloaded the form but I don't have the personal financial information required to submit the form before the end of the day tomorrow. This will take a few days to prepare.
Considering that I will have the last 6 years of US taxes completed by Serbinski and I have a meeting to discuss the process next week. Should I wait and submit all documents at one time when my taxes are complete or should I send to the IRS an incomplete TD F90-22.1 and a request for the 90 day extension?

If you have already obtained professional assistance and have a plan in motion, I would urge you to ask your professional advisor that question, and do exactly as she or he recommends. This is a complex area of accounting, tax, and legal analysis, and one qualified professional should be advising on every element of what you might do. Without wanting to anticipate what advice you might receive on this question, it could well be that your advisor plans to address this aspect of the process when you meet next week -- and doing something now, before that meeting takes place, could have a big impact on what your options might look like next week.

So call the advisor asap and get direction.
