Back filing RRSP questions

Post by calgary-alberta »

I have a couple of questions about back filing 8891:

1. How long does it take for IRS to process the 1040X and 8891 forms?
2. does IRS send notice after they finish processing the amended tax return?

Thanks

IRS rarely sends anything. Since you are not changing your return monetarily, you might not have any sign that they've accepted.

However, you can consider it done as soon as you send it.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

I did it with my OVDI package. So it would be much longer time for IRS to process it. Here is a problem...

If I don't hear anything back from them on RRSP, how should I file f8891 in 2011 ? I would assume that I can file f8891 based on the election that I made in the OVDI package that is year 2003 or 2004.

If they reject my back filing f8891 inside OVDI, then they will have to let me know -- so I have a choice to make it for 2011.

It would be hard to believe they reject certain years -- say they only allow me to back file for 3 years -- so they can profit on FBAR penalty..

We are not talking OVDI here.

Rarely does IRS respond to a 1040-X if it is correct, and if no change in tax.
