Canadian working for US company got IRS Notice of Levy

Post by ricsotto »

I am Canadian working from home for a US company for some time now and got an IRS Notice of Levy (actually the US company informed me they got the IRS Notice of Levy).

I am not a US citizen nor a US permanent resident. Did I do something wrong here, or do I need to file a US tax return?

Based on the forum here, I should not be taxed in the US nor file a US tax return. I only need to file my Canadian tax return. Please advise. Thanks.

I get 1099 from the US company. Now I am wondering if I should have informed IRS that I am a foreign person in the first place. Should I?

You need to file a 1040NR to inform them that you are not taxable, othrwise they have no way of knowing. Since the company is being nailed, it is clear that the correct withholding waiver was never filed.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
